Mage Spec in Patch 2.3.2

2.3.2 is here, and for us mages, this is a good thing!

Here is a synopsis of the changes for mages:

* Cold Snap (Frost) cooldown reduced. It is now in the Ice Block position in the talent tree. This ability will no longer reset the cooldown on Fire Ward.
* Conjure Mana Gem mana restore variance substantially reduced,(Rank 5 Emerald) now restores 2340 to 2460 mana and has three charges.
* Ice Block (Frost) is now available on the trainer to all mages at level 30.
* Icy Veins (NEW Frost Talent) decreases casting time of all spells by 20% and increases the chance your chilling effects will freeze the target by 10%. Lasts 20 sec. 3 min cooldown. It is now in the Cold Snap position in the talent tree.

All of these are nice changes.

So, remember to hit the trainer after upgrading to pick up Ice Block.

Also, there is a new spec that will become the 'standard raiding' spec. While formally that was 10/47/3 (+1), it will now be 2/46/11 (+2). I know, there's lots of arguments for different specs, and it's up to you and how you play. If you're looking for what the theorycrafters have determined will produce the most dmg, it's the 2/46/11 (+2). This allows the Hit bump from the Arc tree, the Dmg bump from the Fire tree, and Icy Veins from the Frost tree. Make sure you put 3 in Elemental Precision in the Frost tree, still...beyond that, it's up to you on how you'll spend the next 7 before IV.

The number-crunchers have also determined that dropping Clearcasting is OK because of: 1. the increased mana restored by Mana Emerald, and 2. the fact that Mana Emerald now has 3 uses.

About Archmagus

Archmagus was created in 2006, when many of our friends were interested in the fine details about how to play a mage. Much of our time not playing WoW was spent researching and analyzing the nuances of spell rotation, gear selection, and overall fine-tuning of maximizing our Mage's performance.
