I frequently get asked about the best way for Mages to make gold.

I have compiled a list of several guides below that I can recommend:

World Of Warcraft Gold Secrets

One of the most thorough gold-guides out there. He provides lots of useful bonus products, a private forum, etc. He offers a very good guarantee, so it's worth trying.

World Of Warcraft WoW Valkors Gold Making Guide

A large guide, updated regularly. Lots of lists, and a lot of emphasis on the Burning Crusade.

Warcraft Riches

A new WoW Gold Guide! This guy has compiled a lot of the strategies from many of the other guides...also with a strong guarantee.

Ultimate World of Warcraft Guide

One of the things that I don't care for with this guide is that he has some exploits. Most of the 'hacks/cheats/exploits' that people advertise are old ones that won't work, or can get you banned. In addition to the gold guide (which is really well done, with tons of interactive links), he offers a list of CURRENT exploits that work. Not my thing, but if you're interested, check it out.

WoW Wealth

There are two great things about this guide: 1) it's the most current one on the market and 2) it comes with some really cool Video Tutorials.

Mage WotLK Updates

Some recent changes to WotLK for Mages:

Focus Magic
2 mages can now cast it on each other and get 3% static and 3% procced crit each. De facto a 6% crit talent now.

Mirror Image
Base damage and sclaing on Fire Blast slightly lowered. Crit modifier down to +50%.

Also - updated Water Elemental Scaling info.

Also - you should use them in a macro that casts "1) IV/AP/Comb 2) Trinket 3) Mirror Image 4) Frostbolt/Fireball".
That way, you can circumvent the odd GCD on no-GCD spells.

Recent Changes
Several mages can now cast Focus Magic on each other and gain both, the static 3% and the procced 3% crit.

Frostfire Bolt DoT not scaling anymore.
Living Bomb affected by Master of Elements and Burnout Mana.
Mirror Image scaling info at the bottom of the post.

Mirror Image put all abilities that are off the GCD on a fixed 1.5s GCD. Abilities on the GCD are not affected.
It affects all clicky trinkets, Counterspell and Icy Veins, Cold Snap and similar spells.

Judgement of Wisdom currently has no cooldown, 25% proc rate and returns 1% max. Mana on beta.

Macro to Conjure Each Mana Gem

This simple macro makes it easy to create one of each type of gem just by mashing the button over and over. With a delay of 45 seconds, if you conjure each type immediately, you'll be ok...if you delay too long in between conjures, you may go past the 45 seconds and you'll get a 'you already have that item' error because it will try to cast Mana Emerald again.

/castsequence reset=45 Conjure Mana Emerald, Conjure Mana Ruby, Conjure Mana Citrine, Conjure Mana Jade, Conjure Mana Agate

If you need to, you can increase the 45 to the number of seconds that you feel you need to complete casting all gems.

Mana Emerald Refresh Macro

If you're like me, you're tired of destroying your partially-used Mana Emerald in order to conjure one with all 3 charges again. If you use one or two charges on a fight, but want to have all 3 charges available for the next fight, you have to open your bag, drag and drop the emerald out, confirm the destroy, then reconjure.

There's a way to do this automatically through a macro:

/run for b=0,4,1 do for s=1,GetContainerNumSlots(b),1 do local n=GetContainerItemLink(b,s) if n and string.find(n,"Mana Emerald") then PickupContainerItem(b,s) DeleteCursorItem() end end end
/cast Conjure Mana Emerald

If you copy and paste the macro above exactly as it appears, it will destroy any Mana Emerald you have (no matter how many charges), and reconjure a new one.

Announce Sheep

To write a simple macro that lets folks around you know what you're doing, you can do something like:

/say "Sheeping %T"
/cast Polymorph

The %T is the macro language for inserting your target's name.

Focus Sheep Macro

This macro will allow you to sheep a target, switch to another target to do DPS, but when you need to re-sheep, all you have to do is hit the button again. It sets the 'focus' on your sheeped target and keeps it there. You don't even 'untarget' the mob that you're DPSing...the target stays on the mob you're killing the whole time. But the poly spell gets cast on the mob you originally cast. This is great for situations where you need to keep a mob poly'd for a long time. You don't have to worry about selecting your 'sheep' target, resheeping, then finding the DPS target again. It also keeps you from accidentally sheeping some other mages sheep thinking it's yours (thereby breaking your own). If you do, in an emergency, need to sheep a new target, just hold Shift and then click this macro.

/clearfocus [modifier:shift]
/clearfocus [target=focus,dead]
/clearfocus [target=focus,noexists]
/focus [target=focus,noexists]
/cast [target=focus] Polymorph: Pig

Obviously the macro above does the 'Pig' instead of the sheep, but you get the idea.

Trinket Macro

This macro will hide the 'Item not Ready' errors, try to use slot 13, then 14 (trinket 1 and 2), then cast whatever spell. Anything that doesn't trigger the Global Cooldown on spells can also be added in here...like Combustion. Essentially, the macro below will, in one button push, activate whichever trinket isn't on cooldown (if any), activate Combustion if it's available, and cast the spell. The next cast will likely have everything on cooldown, so it will just cast the spell. The UI lines hide the error messages. The # line command tells the macro to still show the tooltip for the spell (not just the generic macro name).

Interrupt (StopCasting)

There are times you want to interrupt your casting to cast a different spell...and sometimes you don't want to move to do so. The Stopcasting macros will allow you to have a second spell you cast interrupt whatever first spell you were casting, without getting 'not ready yet'.

/stopcasting
/cast Counterspell

You can replace 'Counterspell' with any spell name, such as Ice Lance, Fire Blast, etc. This macro insures that when you need to cast Counterspell, you don't have to move, or wait for your first spell to finish.

Icy Veins Macro

With the arrival of the Icy Veins talent, mages want to use this speed increase as much as possible.

Fortunately, you can build it right into your existing Trinket Macro.

Significantly, this spell does NOT trigger the global cooldown (GCD). Neither does Combustion. So, a macro like...

...will work when you spam it. (One way to do this really well is to bind this macro to your mouse scroll-wheel..when you roll the wheel it's like clicking really really fast). The above macro also triggers any on-use trinkets.

So basically you can activate your trinket, Combustion, and Icy Veins all at the same time, and if you're spamming this macro, whenever the cooldowns are up, you'll automatically pop them again.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Combustion's cooldown doesn't start until after you use up the crit buff, not when you pop it. So even though both IV and Comb have a 3 min cooldown, they get out of sync right away.

2. The benefit of popping IV with Combustion is limited. Basically you'll just chew through your Combustion a bit faster, thereby triggering the cooldown to start a bit earlier...but not by enough to make it significant.

3. By being 'lazy' and using this macro you run the risk of doing too much damage early on in a fight. If you're raiding, chances are that if you're setting up for a pull you might have all your cooldowns available. If you pop them all together right away, you might push your threat too high. (They buffed mages in 2.3.2, not the tanks' ability to hold aggro.)

4. By being 'lazy' and using this macro you run the risk of popping the trinkets/IV/Comb at a time where you won't fully use them. For example, during fights where you need to stop casting to move (Lurker), or stop casting for aggro reasons (Leo), you don't want to pop them right before you have to stop...otherwise the goodness that is IV will be wasted because you won't be casting.

The solution is to create two different fireball macros. One 'lazy' one above, and another that doesn't pop the IV or Comb (or even trinkets). Just a straight-up Fireball (FB) spam. Use the plain FB spell at the beginning of fights, right before times in the fight when you have to stop, or if you are trying to sync up your cooldowns for a sudden burst of dmg.
